Hawthorn: natural ingredient of WonderOver

The essential activity of Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha) is at the level of the cardiovascular system with a proven improvement of endurance to fatigue. Carries out an andrenergicic action on the beta receptors (such as partial agonist). They are “switches” located on the cell membrane.

At this receptor bind two neurotransmitters, adrenaline and noradrenaline, by inhibition of phosphodiesterase (substance that accelerates a particular chemical reaction), which follows an increase in the rate of intracellular cyclic AMP (cyclic AMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) or cAMP is a metabolite of the cells produced by the enzyme adenylate cyclase from ATP).

It is an important “second messenger” involved in the mechanisms of signal transduction to the interior of the living cells in response to various stimuli such as those induced by hormones glucagon or adrenaline, which are not able to cross the cell membrane.
Its main function consists in the activation of the protein kinase to regulate the passage of calcium through transmembrane ion channels linked in turn to an increase of free calcium ions. It has been well demonstrated a sedative action on the central nervous system.

The anxiolytic and muscle relaxant action of the hawthorn (Crataegus oxycantha L.) is found with a determinate behavior on the excitability of the nervous system. The active ingredients in the plant insomnia diminish the sense of anxiety and dizziness.
Hawthorn is well accepted by the body and does not show any secondary outcome. It is rich in flavonoids, which are about 2% of the weight of dry vegetable and proantocianidoli 3% of the weight of the dry plant. This shrub has a strong affinity towards the heart, especially due to flavonoids and proantocianidoli.

This finding seems to have to be attributed especially to the tannins and flavonoids in force in this plant since it has been proven that these procure sedation and increase sleep.
Decidedly important is the possibility that the hawthorn has to block the free radicals. Thanks to its action, the oxidation of LDL, which are the particles of cholesterol that are usual placed in the wall of blood vessels following their oxidation, is greatly diminished.

Hawthorn belongs to the rose family of which are used the flowering tops and leaves. The active ingredients are mainly flavonoids (iperosid, vitexin-2”-ramnosid), glycosyl flavones, procyanidins, pentacyclic triterpenes (ursolic acid, crategolic acid, oleanolic acid, acantolic acid, neo tegolic acid). The title of flavonoids percentage of drugs should be 0.7% at least.

Clinical applications

One of the properties that are most used of the hawthorn is that of moderate sedative, also documented by several studies. A research conducted using the placebo also gave evidence of the validity of the hawthorn in the form of anxiety disorders (associated with valerian and passionflower). It helps to know that hawthorn also has properties that are more noticeable than cardiotonic and anti hypertensive.

This drug proves in fact to be an appreciable vasodilator and is provided with positive inotropic activity and batmotropa negative. Clinical tests have documented the effect in patients conformations with mild heart failure (NYHA class I-II), especially in those with weak rhythm disorders. The properties are conducted by means of a positive inotropic effect on cardiomyocytes by increasing the extent of contraction with a lower power consumption.

The batmotrope action negative was analyzed by the detection that the intake of hawthorn preparations increase the absolute refractory period, which protects the myocardium by the appearance of arrhythmias, as can occur with different drugs.
Multiple research (including some with placebo) have verified the effectiveness of the hawthorn in the improvement of the conditions hemodynamics in patients with mild, moderate symptoms of high blood pressure and coronary artery disease.

The outcome sedative can be used in conjunction with other products. It was also highlighted a lipid-lowering and anti-atherosclerotic properties of hawthorn. This behavior was then examined on the possibility of the active ingredients to prevent the birth of atherosclerotic plaques in an experimen-
tal scheme.
