This plant belongs to the family of Ippocastanaceae and is also known by the term Castagno d’India. Native to Asia and northern Greece, its natural environ-
ment is represented by the natural mountainous hills of the Balkan Peninsula although nowadays is present in almost all of Europe.

The seeds cultured recently are used in the preparation of the concentrates standard. More rarely is uses the bark of the branches or of the walls of the fruit. The most important bioactive component is escin, a saponin present in the seeds with remarkable quality anti-inflammatory and antiedematose.
In extracts of horse chestnut there are also flavonoids, tannins, sterols and glycosides aesculin and fraxina. In the same way that in derivatives of ivy, their conduct is functional to the vaso-protection and venous vasoconstriction.

It has been recognized on several occasions the symptomatic narrowing of the micro pores present on vascular wall caused by the active ingredients of the horse chestnut. this lower fenestrature of the vessels prevents transpiration of liquid in the subcutis, thereby avoiding the turgor that often accompanies the formation of fatty tissue.

This result is intensified by the contrast implemented by escin in respect of bradykinin, an important component of the vascular permeability. In the comparisons between several active ingredients of different plants, the vase activities protective and anti-edemic of escin was found to be six hundred times greater than that of rutin.

The activities of escin include also an important vasoconstriction provoked by stress to the production of F-alpha prostaglandins and it is for this reason that the horse chestnut is also used in the treatment of varicose veins.

The Council of Europe, for the use of concentrated plant as cosmetic products, indicates the horse chestnut suitable for anti-edema and protective skin microcirculation.

The balsamic effect, invigorating and preservative is among the most effective dished out by the vegetable world for our health. The active ingredient contained in its seeds is the escin, union of saponosidi of triterpene nature with antiexudative action and normalizing the permeability of the vessel wall, as well as the coumarins extracted from the bark, which facilitate the reabsorption of fluids through the lymphatic tissue. The escin is used as a reducing fluid retention and circulatory problems, especially in the lower limbs.

In the cosmetic field is used to its activity vasoprotective and astringent and in the treatment of reddened skin and prevention of unsightly fat. The synergy of multiple flavonoids establishes a characteristic conduct anti-lipo-peroxidic, stabilizing cellular homeostasis.

Homeostasis is the condition of internal stability of living beings that must be maintained even with the change of external conditions for the work of self-regulatory processes. It is the maintenance of compliance of optimal chemical composition of the plasma, interstitial fluid and intracellular fluid.
