The modern bibliography indicates the palmetto as an aid in hair loss and prostate hypertrophy.
The saw palmetto (Sabal serrulata synonymous) is a herb common in southern regions of the United States (where it is also known as Saw Palmetto), in Southern Europe and North Africa. It is a dwarf palm that American Indians employed in the seventeenth century to relieve genitourinary disorders, for testicular atrophy, for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac.

The popular medicine of the West proposed to increase sexual stamina, for migraine and to promote hair growth. The latter use currently sees the use of saw palmetto in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, on the basis of the same reasoning that sees used finasteride in the treatment of the same disease (inhibition of 5 alpha-reductase type 2 of the hair follicles of the scalp).

Preliminary data show the usefulness and applicability of palmetto as a treatment for androgenetic alopecia. Scientific studies have shown the relative utility of the use of the fruit of Serenoa repens as an adjuvant in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in stage I and II and the symptoms associated with it.
This application is spread considerably in the early twentieth century, until becoming serenoa do, around the 90, one of the top ten most plants sold in the United States.

The most part of the plant rich in active principles is composed from the fruit. The chemical components that were detected in it are many and include: sterols (beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campestrolo, cicloartenolo), free fatty acids and glycerides connected (oleic, caprylic acid, myristic, stearic, palmitic), carotenoids, essential oils, carbohydrates (sugars inert, galactose, arabinose), tannins, flavonoids and organic acids (caffeic acid, anthranilic acid, chlorogenic acid). The extract of the fruit of Serenoa order to be valid, must be a lipophilic extract, standardized in fatty acids and sterols.
