California Poppy: natural ingredient of Humor

The Californian poppy (Escholtzia californica Cham.) has sedative properties, and hypno-inducing that makes easy to fall asleep, improves sleep quality, reduces anxiety and irritability without causing depression of the central nervous system and does not affect mental alertness.
By virtue of the antispasmodic characteristics is suitable to combat the night muscle contractions, as the flavonoids in the plant optimize the condition of the microcirculation.

Additional findings identified are those against headache and anti-spasmolytic on enteric muscle structure. The active ingredients are the alkaloids in nulceo isoquinoline ring-system (allocriptopine, protopine, marcapine, chelidonine sanguinarine, criptopina). Other alkaloids were found to be the 12-OH-diidrochelirubine and 10-OH-diidrosanguinarine.

Clinical uses

The Californian poppy is used in the treatment of insomnia and anxiety, often in synergy with other herbs. Certain active ingredients existing in the extract, possess the characteristic of blocking the synthesis of catecholamines and enzymatic degradation as well as stop the monoamine oxidase B and dopamine-beta-hydroxyla-
se.

Another capability of the Californian poppy is to limit the processes of dimerization and peroxidation of the enkephalins, increasing, in fact, the action. A possible affinity exists between the alkaloids of the Californian poppy and those of Papaverum sonniferum has led to the hypothesis, by some authors, to have similar action.

Indeed, the Californian poppy is also capable of a spasmolytic outcome on the smooth muscle of the ileum, as well as of conduct calming and sleep-inducing. However, there is no evidence to show the onset of dependence on the Californian poppy or extracts thereof.
The anti-headache activity of this plant is more relevant to vasomotor conformations. There are no known applications on pregnant women or during lactation and for this reason we do not recommend the use in these subjects.

Main constituents of phytocomplex

The main constituents of the plant are represented by a core tetra idroiso quinoline alkaloids, which represent approximately 0.5% of the dry weight of the drug and can be divided into benzylisoquinolinium alkaloids (escholina); alkaloids’ set of pavine, specific varieties Escholtzia (escholtzina, californidina); series of protopine alkaloids (protopina, allotriptamina, criptopina, (X-allocryptopine); aporfinici alkaloids (N-methyl-laurotetanina, lauroeseholtzina, glaucine); of the group of proto berberine alkaloids (berberine, coptisina, cytosine); benzofenantridinici alkaloids (sanguinarine, che-
leritina, chelidonine, chelirubina, macarpina and diidromacarpina). Cyanogenic glycosides, flavonol glycosides (rutin, quercetin glycosides, isorhamnetin): eschollziaxanlina (xan-
thine pigment); carotenoids.
In the roots are more than the total alkaloids stems: › 2.5%. The alkaloids benzo Fenan tridinici are applicable in very small parts in the leaves and in the stems while, along with cx-allocryptopine and protopin, are the most numerous alkaloids of the roots.

Pharmacological Actions

The plant is used for the mildly sedative hypnotic and analgesic effect. Although the clinical tests are currently limited, numerous pharmacological studies have been performed on individual components of the drug rather than on the plant complex in toto.

Nevertheless, the valences made manifest by the drug can not be conducted to constituents only, as usual, is the plant complexwhich show a predominant role. Recent research carried out employing the tincture and addressed to analyze the sedative and antispasmodic activities of the plant, in addition to proving the above qualities, has highlighted the fact that its allocation is enables to establish that if several active sections include alkaloids, others do not.

The drug, at a lower dose than that in which it develops the sleep-inducing action, produces different outcomes such as choleretic action and regularizing the biliary secretion, sedative effect on the smooth muscle of the gastroenteric apparatus, antitussives. The primary feature of this drug is at the level of the central nervous system, where it leads sleep-inducing activity without causing confusional states in the moment of awakening (called hangover effect).

The drug, administered clinically for a long time, reduces the period of falling asleep and makes better quality of sleep. It is also recognized an anxiolytic property that certainly plays an important function in the herbal utility for that concerns the treatment of secondary disorders of sleep. In clinical use, gives proof of possessing a prolonged action does not determine, however, depression of the central nervous system and is able to maintain mental alertness.
The escolzia is used in the treatment of painful symptoms in the digestive system and biliary tract and headaches. With such characteristics, the plant may be useful in disorders of sleep followed by spasms and pain.

A research has borne out that hydroalcoholic extracts of escolzia limit the enzymatic degradation of catecholamines and the synthesis of adrenaline, as well as the activity of dopamine. These effects indicate that the plant complex retains substantial shares of calecolamine in the brain by virtue to inhibition of their catabolic enzyme and this explains its anxiolytic qualities, which become determinants in the treatment of minor disorders of sleep.

Toxicity, contraindications and side effects

Because clinical studies are still limited, we do not recommend the ’use during pregnancy.
You need to be careful of course, the same way as any plant sedative, to the simultaneous intake of medicines with sedative-hypnotic and antidepressant activity, in order to avoid increase in unwanted sedative activity.
