Where are contained the phytoestrogens

Phytoestrogens are divided into three basic sets: isoflavones, lignans and Cumestani. Precisely:

  • Isoflavones: genistein, daidzein, phytoalexins, formono-
    netin, Resveratrol, biochanin-A, glycitein, equol, Prunecti-
    na, Apigenin, anethole, Hesperidin
  • Lignans: enterolactone, Enterodiolo, Guarcetina, Macchi-
    lina-A
  • Cumestani: phytoalexins, 4-methoxy-phytoalexins

Isoflavones are found in legumes, soy and dairy products such as flour, soy milk and tofu as well as lentils, beans and peas. Isoflavones are the best phytoestrogens.

Lignans are widely distributed in grains, fruits and vegetables, including olive oil. Flax seeds are the most representative in this category, followed by cereals such as wheat, barley, wheat, rye, rice, hops and bran.
The Cumestani are present in the buds and in the forage.

Cereals, legumes, fruits and vegetables are only the forerunners of phytoestrogens, which are put into action in our intestines thanks to the intervention of the bacterial flora.
The assimilation of phytoestrogens is diversified, accordin-
gly, from subject to subject and even in the same person, relating to the power supply in its entirety, to the possible use of antibiotics that may modify the bacterial flora of the intestine and the existence of intestinal disorders such as colitis or constipation. The profiles biologically active of isoflavones are daidzein and genistein, while those of lignans are the enterodiolo and enterolactone.

How operate phytoestrogens

Phytoestrogens have two models of action: like hormonal and non-hormonal.
The valence model with hormone-like promotes defense against cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, and certain cancers that depend on the hormones. Phytoestro-
gens, in fact, are joined to the estrogen receptors, which are the chemical elements from which derives the activation of cellular processes regulated by these hormones. Phytoes-
trogens are able to behave like a weak estrogen ie as agonists or as anti-estrogen or as antagonists, depending on the model of receptor alpha or beta to which they bind.

The non-hormonal action allows to reduce the risk attributa-
ble to some types of tumors. Phytoestrogens possess the property of preventing the differentiation and reproduction of malignant cells by blocking also the creation of new blood vessels principle relevant to the development of a tumor.
Phytoestrogens are also equipped with an antioxidant activity capable of limiting the damage caused by free radicals which are one of the causes of aging and are also able to provide a modest antihypertensive activity and anti-inflammatory.
