Activity of caffeine

Caffeine has a stimulating effect on Central Nervous SystemThe effects of caffeine are expressed with CNS stimulant activity, on the cardiovascular sy-
stem, on the liberation of catecholamines, in the gastric acid synthesis and metabolism in general.
The outcome of caffeine is biologically mediated by cyclic AMP (adenosine 5'-monopho-
sphate) with a combined action on two levels. The first is the increase of the synthesis of cAMP that blocks the inhibitor of the enzyme adenylate-ciclasie converts ATP into cAMP, while the second level slows the breakdown of cAMP, to which caffeine inhibits the phosphodiesterase enzyme, that transforms cAMP to AMP.

In addition to this, caffeine influence the activity of various neurotransmitters such as serotonin, the catecholamines, dopamine and certain amino acids.
The effects on the nervous system are controversial since lower doses of 500 mg. promote pleasurable sensations with an increase of waking state, alertness, concentration and the possibility of improving overall physical and psychological functionality.

Opposite, larger doses promote anxiety, tremors, nausea, agitation, inconstant performance and diuresis. These effects are due to inhibition of benzodiazepine receptors by the caffeine alone, provided with a degree of lipophilicity superior of its metabolic and such as to enable it to pass through the hematoencephalic barrier more easily.
