Valerian: natural ingredient of Humor

Valerian: natural ingredient of HumorTo the valerian are attributed sedatives characteristics on the central nervous system, hypnoti-
cs and spasmolytic (which facili-
tate sleep).
These properties would be the consequence of the reinforce-
ment of specific devices suitable for nerve communication, by increasing the availability of the neurotransmitter gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), which affects on the central nervous system depressant, although some studies have indicated that the mechanism of action could be much more complex and involving other neuronal systems.

Valeriana officinalis (root and rhizome) is used for its sedative and hypnotic properties, as well as anti-spastic enteric.
The active ingredients most relevant are represented by sesquiterpenes force in the essential oil, particularly acids valerenyc, valerianone, valerianale, bornyl acetate, isovale-
rianato dibornyl, ossivalerenico acid, the acid acetossivale-
renic. They found traces of valepotriati (dinuclearmonoterpe-
nes) and alkaloids.

Impieghi clinici

Valerian: natural ingredient of HumorNumerous studies have validated the results of spasmolytic and soothing active ingredients of the plant, mainly attributed to the valerenic acids. Were examined, in addition, the reciprocal influences betwe-
en GABA (a neurotransmitter essential for stress inhibitor) and valerenic acids, although these agents can not, alone, confuse benzodiazepines in the CNS (Central Nervous System) and for this reason their mechanism of action remains largely unknown, if omit their according to the adenosine receptors, which is provided inhibitory valences on the CNS.

Studies performed on several patients, many of whom double-blind, showed a significant validity of the essences of valerian, reporting a significant decrease in sleep latency without interference on the quality of the same (regular oneiric activity, no activity changes recordable with cerebral EEG).

Valerian, moreover, does not seem to affect the activity or visual attention due to the driving vehicles or using machinery, or create a synergistic activity with alcohol as developer of the consequences of depression. The toxicity is very low and safety of use.
