St. John’s Wort: a natural ingredient of Humor

St. John’s Wort: a natural ingredient of HumorSt. John’s Wort (Hypericum Perfora-
tum) acts synergistically on depression through various processes such as blocking of monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) and catechol - methyltransfe-
rase (comt), which implies an increased activity of nerve mediators with a stimulating action. both of these actions are due to quercetin, to its aglycone altetraidroxantone producing a marked antidepres-
sant effect.

St. John’s Wort can take action against premature ejaculati-
on due to the possibility that its active ingredients have to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, noradrenaline and GABA at synaptic level.
It is also now proved that the prolonged presence of these mediators at the synaptic level is expressed with a strong antidepressant activity. Hypericin may also settle in the serotonin receptor sites on nucleus nerve covering the role, even in this situation, of an antidepressant.

Hypericum perforatum L. is an herb which used flowering tops; it is provided with an antidepressant action and mood stabilizer. The active substances are composed from naftodiantronyc called “hypericins” which include hypericin, pseudohypericin, the ciclopseudohypericine, the isohyperici-
ne, the protohypericine.
There are also flavonoid glycosides, bioflavonoid, felilpropans procyanidins (in small quantities), acilfloroglu-
cianoli, hyperforin.

Clinical applications

St. John’s Wort: a natural ingredient of HumorThe antidepressant action of hyperi-
cum has been confirmed by several tests performed with both placebo and by comparison with known antidepressant such as sertraline, fluoxetine and the laparoxetina.
The results were so encouraging that in Germany the herb has been approved by the Pharmacopoeia as a method of treatment of anxiety and depression.

The efficacy of hypericum is compa-
rable to that of imipramine emaproti-
lina. It was conducted a meta-analy-
sis of 23 randomized trials with hypericum which involved a total of 1757 patients with mild to moderate depression.
The conclusion was that the hypericum extract, evaluated after 2 to 4 weeks is superior to placebo and as effective as traditional antidepressants.

The mechanism of action of Hypericum perforatum is that of inhibition of the reuptake of serotonin in the post-synaptic inhibition of the uptake of norepinephrine and dopamine, and binding (in vitro) with the GABA receptor (GABA is amino butyric acid of the gama and is an inhibitory neurotransmit-
