California Poppy: natural ingredient of Humor
The California Poppy (Esche-
scholtzia californica Cham.) has properties sedative and hypnotic that facilitates sleep onset, improves sleep quality, reduces anxiety and irritability without cause central nervous system depression and does not influence mental alertness.
By virtue of the antispasmodic properties is appropriate for combat nocturnal muscle contractions because the flavonoids in the plant optimize the condition of the microcirculation.
Additional results are found on the spasmolytic and anti headache enteric muscle structure. The active ingredients are the alkaloids in nulceo iso quinolinic (allocriptopina, protopin, marcapina, chelidonina sanguinarina, criptopina). Other alkaloids found are the 12-OH-diidrochelirubina and 10-OH-diidrosanguinarina.
Clinical applications
The California Poppy is used in treatment of insomnia and anxiety, often in combination with other herbs. Certain active principles in force in the extract, possess the characteristic to block the synthesis of catecholamines and the enzymatic degradation as well as arrest the monoamine oxidase B and dopamine-beta-hydroxylase.
Another capability of the California Poppy is to limit the processes of dimerization and peroxidation of the enkephalins, increasing, in fact, the action. A possible affinity between the alkaloids of the California Poppy and those of the papaver somniferum has been thought, by some authors, a similar action.
Effectively the California Poppy is also capable of a spasmolytic result on the smooth muscle of the ileum, as well as to conduct calming and induce sleep. However, there are no elements attesting the onset of dependence on the California Poppy or its extracts.
The headache of this plant is more relevant to the vasomotor conformations. No known applications on pregnant women or during lactation and for this reason it is not recommended for use in these persons.
