Orthosiphon: natural ingredient of Kalospeed
The combination of leaves and stems of several plants of the genus Orthosipho-
nis (Or. aristatus, spicatus, stamineus) harvested before flowering compose the mixture called Java Tea (Java Tea). These plants, called generically Ortho-
siphon, are native to South East Asia and tropical Australia.
The Orthosiphon contains lipophilic flavones such as sinensetin and isosinensetina, glycosidic flavonoids, rosmarinic acid, inositol and phytosterols and is composed of for 0.7% of an essential oil.
The Orthosiphon, thanks to the property to increase the excretion of liquid, is traditionally used to facilitate weight loss. However, the therapeutic indications for which the use of Orthosiphon is recommended are inflammations of the urinary tract, and as an adjunct in the treatment of urinary tract infections.
It has been suggested that the tea of Java may be useful in preventing the formation of stones based on of uric acid, but for this indication, there is no clinical evidence of efficacy. Another property is a known weak spasmolytic activity type for which it is used to treat disorders of the gallbladder.
The administration of Orthosiphon in laboratory animals produces increased diuresis and sodium excretion. However, the effectiveness of the diuretic and natriuretic has not been confirmed by controlled clinical trials.
In the laboratory has also been shown that the flavonoids present in the plant exert antioxidant activity and that substances present in the plant (among these the metilripariocromene A, isolated from the leaves of Orthosiphon aristatus), are able to reduce blood pressure.
The Orthosiphon can be taken in capsule, tablet, such as infusion and tincture. As an infusion using 2-3 grams per day in 150 ml. of water for 2-3 times per day.
