Lemon: nataural ingredient of Kalospeed
Lemon (Citrus Medica Limonum, Family: Rutaceae / Cistaceae, Genus: Citrus Species: Citrus medica limonum) is a woody plant with evergreen leaves up to 4-5 meters high. The branches and young leaves have a purplish-brown color that distinguishes from the other lemon citrus.
The flowers are inserted leaf axils and are white to internal and rose to the outside. The fruit (hesperidium) is oval-oblong, has a yellow skin on the outside and white inside. Contains 5-10 cloves in which the seeds are present.
History of lemon
The genus name is derived from the greek “kitron” that indicated the same plant. The term “medical” indicates the Eastern origin (from Media, currently Iran) of the plant. The term “lemon” comes from the Arabic name that sounds the same, or from the greek “lemon” which means grassy lawn because the fruit not yet mature for precisely has the color of the grass.
Harvesting period of lemon
The lemon is harvested when fully ripe fruits take on a yellow color. From the phyto therapic point of view we use the lemon juice obtained by squeezing and zest of the fruit or the pericardium from which we extract the essential oil.
Effectiveness of the lemon
The active ingredients contained in the essential oil are mainly limonene and citral; are also present some flavonoids as the citronina and limocitrina. The juice is known to be rich in vitamin C, but also B and P and citric acid.
The presence of vitamin C justifies the therapeutic action of the lemon against scurvy, a disease that derives from the lack of food of the same vitamin and mainly affecting the sailors who were at sea for a long time without having fresh fruit and vegetables: vitamin C is also called ascorbic acid.
The lemon juice and essential oil are typically used in infectious diseases in the long course, as the forms of flu and respiratory inflammation. A justification for this use is now proven that vitamin C is necessary for the production of antibodies.
The essential oil of lemon also has a dermatological use for its blandly antiseptic action and for the tonic activity that exerts on the capillary circulation; is therefore useful in rashes and irritation of the skin in the genre.
