tions of cell membranes through interaction with enzymes, with the ion pumps; of stimulating the synthesis of mucopolysacchari-
des; of controlling the synthesis of endothelial prosta cyclin similar substances.

Have recently been investigated others specific mechanisms of action, often shared with other phenolic derivatives such as tannins, which is rich blueberry and among them we should highlight the superoxide ion, responsible for several pathological processes (in particular damage by ischemia, diabetes and cataracts).
This activity is conducted by the derived flavonoid anthocyanin and tannin. The inhibitory activity of aldose reductase, which catalyzes the reduction principally from glucose to sorbitol in subjects hyperglycemic causing an accumulation of sorbitol in the crystalline lens, in the nerves, in the retina and in the kidneys and which is responsible for a series of complications in these districts.

Blueberry anthocyanins have shown a remarkable ability to inhibit this enzyme and the high safety of use allows the employment indefinitely.
The blueberry, now used in modern herbalism as a dry extract is useful as an antioxidant helping to prevent diseases associated with aging.

The fruit of the blueberry contains blue type anthocyanin pigments, known as myrtillin. The power of anthocyanins dyes is established; they penetrate the cells to the bacteria by reducing or damaging their vitality.

For the presence of pigments anthocyanosides, bilberry is useful for the protection of the blood vessels. These would lead to a reduction of platelet aggregation by ADP (adenosine diphosphate), PAF (Platelet Activating Factor) and arachidonic acid.

According to a study conducted in South Africa in the Department of Medicine of the University of Cape Town, blueberry extracts would seem to prevent kidney. In this randomized, double-blind, were involved men with no history of kidney stones.
In the weeks of treatment, the power supply of the participants has been kept under control in order to assess the “intake of food and fluids”. The urine collected to the participants were then used to verify the degree of “urinary relative saturation of calcium oxalate”.

From these studies it was possible to estimate that the extract of blueberry ’able to alter the excretion of oxalate of calcium and increase the excretion of citrate. In addition, there was a decrease in the saturation of calcium oxalate. By means these results, the researchers suggested that the use of bilberry extracts may be a natural alternative for the treatment of calcium oxalate urolithiasis.
