The Destriero men treated themselves quite well
in the morning. Here's what they had:
|
|
|
Tea or coffee sweetened with honey
20 gr butter and 2 or 3 gr of , a special food supplement made up of honey, royal jelly,
pollen, ginseng and guarana 40 gr blackcurrant jam, with three
slices of toast, 50 gr ham or bacon, or 50 gr cheese
some fruit (an apple or a pear)
a tablet of Vitamin C
two tablets containing ginseng, acetylcarnitine,
phospholipids
But why just this choice of foods? Let's examine
them one by one.

|
Tea and coffee both contain caffeine,
which helps you wake up.Honey, instead of common white sugar (glucose),
causes less insulin overloads - insulin is the hormone produced by
the pancreas which allows body cells to use the sugars circulating
in our bloodstream. If insulin is not stimulated in waves, as glucose
does, but in a less violent and more constant way, as is the case
with honey, glycaemia - the concentration of sugars in blood - stays
high longer, with a double effect - on one hand, this 'fuel' remains
available to the muscles and brain for longer, and on the other hand
hunger pangs are avoided (the lowering of glycemia is exactly one
of the main causes of the sensation of hunger). Butter supplies an
amount of fats which besides being highly energizing also aids a better
utilization of sugars through complex biochemical reactions. And the
jam - why blackcurrants? Because of their richness in cyanosids and
flavonoids, substances which avoid loss of eyesight sharpness when
light gets dimmer. |
|
|
Ham and cheese
are included in our breakfast - but not only there - since they
supply a good quantity of proteins and minerals and are very easily
digested, which makes them ideal food for anybody who wants to avoid
sleepiness or loss in concentration after eating. |
|
|
Then, fruit. Apples
and pears are rich in complex sugars (just like honey) and fiber,
which helps keep the bowel healthy. Finally, vitamin C and supplements.
The former is useful for a lot of reasons - for instance, it aids
the absorption of iron contained in other foods we eat during the
day, and this is very important, especially when this precious element
is lost in great quantities through intense sweating, i.e. during
exercise. And what about the substances contained in the supplement
tablets? Acetylcarnitine aids muscular contraction and helps prevent
cramps; phospholipids (for instance in soya beans) feed the brain
and enhance attention and concentration; ginseng increases muscular
potency and mental lucidity, contributing to shorten reaction times;
cyanosids (also contained in blackcurrants) furtherly enhance eyesight
sharpness. |
